What’s New with PDX Next (Updated June 10)

Something to Smile about in June

PDX Comic: An Everyday Adventure Through Construction Detours

As you already know, things at PDX look a little different right now. Temporary walls have closed off parts of the main terminal, and we’ve installed detours to help you get around the construction that’s underway.

While there’s much to look forward to, getting used to these changes might be a bit irritating – especially for those with a comfortable books-then-doughnuts airport routine. That’s the setup to the latest comic from Oregon-based artist Aki Ruiz, who teamed up with writer JD Shadel to tell the story of a few travelers making their way through PDX in the not-so-distant future. Read on to see how the loveable duo discovers what magic is happening behind the scenes.

Construction Impacts to Expect

For your safety, do not enter construction areas. To avoid serious injury, never cross a construction rope, barricade or fence to enter a construction site. We don’t want you to get hurt!

To help you plan for what’s ahead, we’re listing construction impacts in order by date. These updates are posted once a month, but information is constantly evolving – you’re encouraged to check back periodically to see what’s new, noted in red.

Concourse C Walkway Removal

Starting the week of June 7, the Concourse C moving walkway closes for removal. Like the Concourse D walkway, this closure and removal is part of preparing for the footprint of the new main terminal. There may be a few more steps now, but when the new main terminal is complete, it’ll be a short stroll through a bright, open space.

Baggage Claim Carousel Closures

Baggage carousel 9 and oversized bag door 8 are closed through July while we upgrade our HVAC system as part of the new main terminal design.

Baggage carousel 4 will close periodically based on flight schedules as part of the same upgrade efforts. Those closures will continue through September.

Scaffolding Rises in the Ticket Lobby

Here’s a mock-up of what you might see when scaffolding goes up in the ticket lobby.

If you look up in the ticket lobby, you’ve no doubt noticed the tell-tale signs of construction. As we continue to work on the ceiling in preparation for the new roof and HVAC system, our construction teams had to think creatively about the best – and safest – way to complete the overhead work.

With that in mind, you’ll soon see a new feature rise up in the ticket lobby: scaffolding. This allows ceiling work to continue efficiently and safely by eliminating the need for scissor lifts. It also allows multiple trades to work overhead at the same time.

Lost & Found Moves to Baggage Claim on June 28

On Monday, June 28 at 2 p.m., the Lost & Found office opens in its new home in baggage claim. You’ll find the office on the north end near International Arrivals, down the hallway across from carousel 10. The mezzanine Lost & Found drop box will also move to the new location on that date.

As a reminder, the best first step for travelers to find a lost item is to submit an inquiry on the Lost & Found website.
