The search for the right internship can be disappointing, to say the least. The resumes, cover letters and applications sent out before summer begins can be tedious as students try to find a place to gain necessary experience as graduation draws near. When Dana Lawson-Rivera came into the Port of Portland for her interview, she was finally at the end of her search. As she stated, “This was one of my best, and last, leads on an internship.”
The concept of a year-long internship rather than the compact time frame of one summer intrigued her, providing opportunities to hone her skills over time. She was also enticed by the Port’s careers tagline of “We’re not what you expect,” and the idea of an environment that allows room for support, diversity and collaboration as a part of the internship experience.
Through her internship, Dana is exploring her interest in energy, an aspect of one of her two majors at the University of Portland. With help from her mentor, Mia Yang, Dana assists with day-to-day duties around strategic energy management as well as various projects that push the organization to excel in energy efficiency.
The Port’s collaborative work environment has inspired Dana to take the practice with her into future positions. She sees the ability to approach coworkers and solve problems together as a fundamental tool in a team-based atmosphere. Working in an atmosphere that showcases these interpersonal skills is part of Dana’s personal development as much as her professional development.
Outside the workplace, Dana follows her passion for swimming. A competitive swimmer from age seven through high school graduation, Dana still makes time for swimming, for both exercise and fun. She is captivated by cooking and baking, and perhaps more unexpectedly, antiques.
“I LOVE antiques. I am fascinated by the past and the objects – art, common items, homes – that were owned by people and important to their daily lives. It is all just so cool; there is no better word for it!”
