By the Numbers: PDX Holidays

If you travel during the holidays, you already know it’s a busy time at Portland International Airport with 64,000 passengers passing through on peak days.

But did you know these PDX holiday facts, spanning from fruitcake to beer:

Number of fruitcakes sold

Yes, you can buy fruitcake at the airport, with Made in Oregon estimating sales of 50 to 100 of them.

Number of missing scarves and mittens

In 2017, airport users left behind 54 gloves and 61 scarves over the holiday period. That’s an improvement from 2016, when 82 gloves and 68 scarves turned up at lost and found.

Number of bags handled

Last year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, some 630,000 bags moved through PDX.

Three most popular gifts to buy at the airport

Oregon beer, wine and chocolate top the list, with brands such as Moonstruck (we’re partial to their PDX carpet themed bar), Alma and Woodblock among the local chocolate favorites.

Most unusual (and locally-conceived) stocking stuffers

Santa can find a D.B. Cooper action figure, beer hiking guide, unicorn stickers and illustrated Portland-themed playing cards at Powell’s Books. Pick up bags of hazelnuts or a Sasquatch T-shirt at Made in Oregon.
